We use the information on your application to assign you to a space that most closely matches your choices (and you can list up to 25 building/room combinations).

Apply early – You don’t have to wait until you know the status of your admission to the University of Minnesota to apply. Applying early puts you in a better position to get one of your preferred buildings or room types, and all that is needed is a non-refundable $50 housing application fee.

Key Dates for New Students

November

The housing application opens each year in November for new first-year students. Our best advice is to submit your application as soon as possible—you do not need to wait until you've been admitted or confirmed your enrollment. It only costs $50 to submit the Housing application, and applying early puts you in the best position to get assigned to one of your top preferences.

Pro tip! Your housing application date is one of the first factors we look at when making assignments. You can log back into your application and change your answers until May 15, so you can apply early and then go back later to add things like a mutual roommate request or LLC preference.

Making changes won't change the initial application date we use when making assignments.

March

March 1 is the priority date to apply to live in one of 30+ Living Learning Communities, which are situated in designated areas of specific buildings. You may include two Living Learning Community preferences on your application, and there are no extra fees to live in a Living Learning Community.

Many Living Learning Communities fill before March 1. If the Living Learning Community is not full, students will be considered based on program requirements and the date of your housing application.

Students accepted to a Living Learning Community will be informed in early June ahead of their final assignment notice.

May

All first-year students who are admitted to the University must pay their enrollment confirmation fee and $200 housing guarantee to confirm a spot in University housing.

The housing guarantee payment will be applied to your fall housing charges. Payment extension requests are available.

July

All guaranteed students will receive their complete housing assignment details and roommate information (if applicable) by the end of July.

Note: Students who apply after the Housing guarantee deadline will be notified of their final assignment by mid-August.

Housing Applications

New 2024-2025

We start accepting applications from new first-year and transfer students wanting housing for the academic year beginning in November. This is also the application for students who do not currently live on campus but may have lived on campus in the past.

Roommates

Do you know who you want as your roommate? It needs to be a mutual request, so enter their Student ID on your application, and be sure they put your information on their application. Also, if you want to live in an LLC, review the LLC requirements in advance to make sure you both meet them.

Don't have a specific roommate in mind? No problem. If you want, you can use our Roommate Search to find someone to be your roommate. The search system is made available in the spring, and it is constantly updated as new students apply for housing.

Otherwise, we can use the answers you give on the application questionnaire to match you with a roommate. Don't worry! When we've asked residents, we've found equal levels of satisfaction between students who pre-selected their roommate and those who were randomly assigned.

Gender Open Space

We are focused on creating an inclusive environment for all residents. With Gender Open Housing, students can live together regardless of sex, gender identity, and/or gender expression. You can note this preference on your application.
